It’s always difficult to find the perfect shelving system for odd or unusual spaces. With a little DIY initiative (and a close-by hardware store), anyone can create cool, industrial-chic pipe shelving to custom fit your space.
I recently redesigned a bathroom that has to be one of my favorites so far. Sometimes being on a tight budget calls for creative solutions like these pipe shelves we designed for the awkward, unused ledge behind the tub.
I designed this space to be a bright and stylish bathroom so I didn’t want the shelves to be heavy and industrial looking with lots of piping. By using a single pipe design secured to the base shelf and stopping at the top shelf, we kept it minimal, clean and modern. Keeping with our black and white color palette I had the shelves painted black and used the silver tone zinc pipe (it also comes in black pipe for a more industrial look). The flanges support each self on the top and underside. These are so incredibly sturdy and strong, and for shelves like these that are not very deep and have support walls on 2 sides, you don’t need a lot of piping.
To create these pipe shelves we used:
- 6 1″ pipes – 12 inches long
- 12 1″ pipe flanges
- 4 shelves
- Black marine paint

I love this look, Carol. Would like to create a sort of open closet design for my girl using the same idea.
Thanks Kris! That’s a great idea and would be easy to do. Let me know if/when you do it and if you need any help.
